Relocating to Brisbane? Where to Stay While You Find a Home

Moving to Brisbane is exciting.

It’s also a little overwhelming.

I’ve been on both sides of it. I moved from Brisbane to the UK in 1998 and returned home in 2010. Since then, I’ve hosted international students, welcomed guests who were relocating to Brisbane from around Australia and overseas, and now work in relocation consulting helping people settle into Brisbane.

One thing I’ve learned is that many people put enormous pressure on themselves to find a rental property immediately.

My advice?

Don’t.

Unless you already know Brisbane exceptionally well, giving yourself a few weeks to get your bearings can save you from making an expensive mistake.

Temporary accommodation in Brisbane gives you the chance to explore suburbs, understand commuting times, inspect properties in person and work out where you genuinely want to live before signing a lease.

If you’re relocating to Brisbane, here’s what I suggest.

Why Not Sign a Lease Immediately?

When you’re moving to a new city, it’s easy to fall in love with a suburb online.

The problem is that real life doesn’t always match the brochure.

That apartment that looked perfect on a map might be next to a busy road. The suburb that seemed close to work may involve a much longer commute than you expected. The rental that looked ideal in photos may feel completely different in person.

Brisbane is also surprisingly spread out.

Many people assume they can easily travel from one side of the city to the other. Then they discover that crossing Brisbane during peak hour is very different from looking at Google Maps at 10pm.

Staying in temporary accommodation while moving to Brisbane allows you to:

  • Learn different suburbs
  • Understand commuting times
  • Explore local amenities
  • Visit schools and childcare centres
  • Inspect rental properties
  • Get a feel for Brisbane’s lifestyle
  • Make decisions without unnecessary pressure

In my experience, a few weeks spent exploring Brisbane can lead to much better long-term decisions.

How Long Does Relocation Usually Take?

Everyone’s situation is different, but this is a fairly typical relocation timeline.

Relocation StageTypical Timeframe
Arrival in BrisbaneWeek 1
Suburb researchWeeks 1–2
Property inspectionsWeeks 2–4
Rental applicationsWeeks 2–5
Lease approvalWeeks 3–6
Move into permanent homeWeeks 4–8

Some people move much faster. Others take several months.

The important thing is allowing yourself enough time to make informed decisions rather than rushed ones.

Best Brisbane Suburbs to Explore

If you’re unfamiliar with Brisbane, these inner and middle-ring suburbs are excellent places to start.

Kelvin Grove

As someone who has lived in Kelvin Grove since 2020, I may be slightly biased.

But it genuinely offers a great balance of convenience and lifestyle.

You’re close to the CBD, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Queensland University of Technology, Victoria Park and excellent public transport. The Kelvin Grove Urban Village provides supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and everyday services within walking distance.

For newcomers, it offers a very easy introduction to Brisbane living.

Newmarket

Popular with professionals and families, Newmarket offers excellent transport connections, shopping facilities and a mix of character homes and newer developments.

Herston

Ideal for healthcare workers and anyone wanting proximity to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Herston is close to the city while maintaining a quieter residential feel.

Paddington

One of Brisbane’s most iconic suburbs. Character homes, cafes, boutique shopping and plenty of personality.

Red Hill

Adjacent to Paddington but often slightly quieter, Red Hill combines convenience with a strong community feel.

Ashgrove

Popular with families, Ashgrove offers leafy streets, larger homes and a relaxed suburban atmosphere while remaining close to the city.

Why Temporary Accommodation Makes Relocation Easier

Many people automatically compare hotels and rental properties.

However, furnished apartments in Brisbane often provide a more practical option during relocation.

A hotel works well for a few nights.

A relocation often takes weeks.

When you’re attending inspections, completing paperwork, setting up bank accounts, arranging utilities and learning a new city, having somewhere that feels like home becomes important.

Many people find a furnished apartment in Brisbane offers:

  • More space
  • A full kitchen
  • Laundry facilities
  • Dedicated workspace
  • Better value for longer stays
  • Greater flexibility

After a week or two, being able to cook your own meals and do your washing without leaving the building becomes surprisingly important.
