I live in Kelvin Grove and my son went to Kelvin Grove State College and I spend most of my time exploring it with my family, so this guide isn’t based on a quick visit or a list pulled from Google. These are places I walk past daily, venues I’ve personally visited, and local favourites I come back to again and again.
Kelvin Grove is one of Brisbane’s most underrated inner-city suburbs. It blends village-style living with a creative edge, thanks to the influence of Queensland University of Technology, a thriving weekend market scene, and easy access to the CBD. Whether you’re here for a morning coffee, a family outing, or a full day exploring, there’s more to do than most people expect.
In this guide, I’ve separated the best experiences into two sections. First, the standout things to do right here in Kelvin Grove, all within easy walking distance. Then, I’ve included nearby Brisbane highlights that are just a short drive or bus ride away, (and I show you how to get to the Kelvin Grove QUT busway here) so you can make the most of your time in the area.
Best Things to Do Right in Kelvin Grove
If you’re keen to stay local, here are my tried-and-tested picks for what to do just downstairs.
1. Stroll Through Kelvin Grove Village

The heart of our suburb is the Kelvin Grove Village, and it’s always buzzing. You’ll find a mix of cafés, casual dining spots, and little specialty stores. On a sunny day it’s perfect for a lazy coffee and some people-watching. If you come on a Saturday morning, the village really comes alive with the markets.
2. Visit the Kelvin Grove Village Markets

Every Saturday from early morning, the markets fill the main street with stalls selling fresh produce, flowers, gourmet treats, and unique handmade goods. There’s always live music, plenty of food trucks, and a friendly community vibe. It’s a great place to grab breakfast, stock up on fresh fruit and veg, and chat with local stallholders.
I wrote more about the Kelvin Grove Markets here.
3. Explore Victoria Park / Barrambin

Be quick! Victoria Park is about to be fenced off to the public while they build the stadium!
Right next to Kelvin Grove is one of Brisbane’s largest inner-city green spaces. Victoria Park, also known by its traditional name Barrambin, has walking and cycling paths, shady picnic areas, and sweeping views of the city skyline. It’s a favourite spot for locals to relax, go for a run, or just spread out a blanket for an afternoon in the sun.
For kids, there’s an incredible adventure playground with climbing structures and slides that is part of the bistro area. You can easily spend a couple of hours here without spending a cent.
If you do have some cash to splash you may like to have a round of mini golf or buy a snack or a meal in the bistro. Golfers can use the driving range to practice their swing!
4. Swim at the QUT Pool

If you’re looking for a great place to swim in Kelvin Grove, the QUT pool is a fantastic option. It’s a modern, well-maintained facility right on campus that welcomes both students and the local community. Whether you want to do some serious laps or just splash around and have fun, the pool caters to all skill levels. It’s a beautiful 25 metre indoor pool that sits around 26.5 degrees in the water but the ambiance is nice and warm being around 32 degrees.
Plus, it’s a lovely spot to cool down after a busy day exploring the area. With convenient opening hours and friendly staff, it’s no surprise that swimming at QUT has become a favourite pastime for many locals.
5. Enjoy the Arts at QUT Creative Industries Precinct
Kelvin Grove is home to the Queensland University of Technology Creative Industries Precinct. Situated on the corner of Kelvin Grove Road and Musk Avenue, the precinct is adjacent to La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre.
The $80 million purpose-built Creative Industries Precinct has been designed to shine a light on the creative process. The precinct houses communication, creative arts and design disciplines with state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, including performance spaces, galleries, music and film studios, and digital fabrication labs.
The spaces are designed to make the creative process more visible, with windows and viewing panels allowing anyone to watch the work as it happens.
Throughout the year there are exhibitions, performances, and events featuring up-and-coming talent. From student theatre productions to art installations, it’s a great way to see fresh creativity right on our doorstep.
6. Catch a Show at La Boite Theatre
La Boite Theatre Company, located in the iconic Roundhouse Theatre, is a Kelvin Grove gem. They produce a mix of classic and contemporary performances, often with a uniquely Brisbane twist. It’s a fantastic night out and supports our local arts scene. You can find out what’s on at La Boite here.
7. Visit Roma Street Parkland

Spanning around 16 hectares on the edge of Brisbane’s CBD, Roma Street Parkland is one of the world’s largest subtropical urban gardens, with distinct precincts that move from formal display gardens and rainforest pockets to lakes, waterfalls and long, winding paths. I recommend it if you fancy ‘wandering’ rather than rushing. Each turn reveals something different, whether it’s a quiet lawn, a shaded boardwalk or a water feature tucked away from the main paths.
Follow my instructions here that show you how to get to the parkland from the apartments. Easy to access and dotted with cafés, picnic spots and barbecues, Roma Street Parkland feels like a carefully curated escape from the city that’s worth slowing down for. Read more about what I think about the parkland here.
8. Join a Local Sports or Fitness Group
Kelvin Grove has an active community when it comes to sport and fitness. You can join a yoga class, take part in a bootcamp in the park, or get involved in social sports teams. If you prefer to go solo, the walking and cycling routes through Victoria Park are ideal.
9. Take a Heritage Walk
Embedded in the footpaths around Kelvin Grove are historical text plates located throughout the Kelvin Grove Urban Village and park areas. They are part of public art initiatives in the area to share the history of the site, which has Indigenous, military, and educational history. They provide snippets of the area’s rich history for passers-by to read as they walk through the area. You can read more about them here.
The suburb is also full of charming Queenslander homes and heritage buildings. A self-guided walk through the streets (I recommend will give you a sense of the area’s history. Look out for the old tramways, classic timber houses, and well-preserved public buildings that tell the story of Kelvin Grove’s past.
10. Enjoy the Best Places to Eat in Kelvin Grove

Kelvin Grove’s Urban Village is awash with fabulous places to eat and drink. Whether you are after a coffee in the morning or a full breakfast, lunch or dinner, then you will be satisfied in our suburb. At the time of writing we had 6 coffee shops in the Urban Village, more in QUT campus and even more in surrounding suburbs.
We have every cuisine on offer from around the world including:
- Chinese
- Vietnamese
- Japanese
- Turkish
- Korean and more!
There are also fast food options like KFC, Red Rooster, Burger Urge, Zambrero and fish and chips.

If you’re staying in Kelvin Grove, catching a Broncos, Dolphins game, Magic Round, State of Origin, Queensland Reds, Brisbane Roar or any other world class game – we are one of the best areas to stay.
