If you’re heading to Brisbane for Magic Round, one thing becomes clear very quickly.
Accommodation gets expensive and it gets snapped up. Fast.
We’re talking tens of thousands of fans descending on Brisbane, all trying to stay as close as possible to Suncorp Stadium… without paying eye-watering prices.
Because I live here, I see it happen every year.
People leave it too late, panic book something in the CBD, and end up:
- paying more than they expected
- dealing with crowds everywhere
- and wishing they’d looked just slightly outside the obvious areas
Which is exactly why I’ve put this guide together.
Because there is a smarter way to do Magic Round accommodation in Brisbane.
And if you haven’t considered Kelvin Grove yet… I am going to tell you why you should.
If you’re wondering what there is to do in Kelvin Grove (and surrounds) I have written a detailed article!
Magic Round Brisbane Accommodation: What You Need to Know First

Let’s start here.
If you’re searching for:
- Magic Round Brisbane accommodation
- NRL Magic Round hotels
- where to stay near Suncorp Stadium
You’re not alone.
And you’re also competing with a lot of other people doing the exact same thing.
Magic Round isn’t just another sporting weekend. It’s one of the biggest events on the Brisbane calendar, and accommodation near the stadium books out quickly – especially anything within walking distance.
The default areas most visitors look at are:
- Brisbane CBD
- South Bank
- Milton
And yes – they are reasonably convenient.
But they’re also:
- the most expensive
- the busiest
- and the first to sell out
So the real question becomes:
Do you want to stay where everyone else is… or do you want to stay smart and still walkable with facilities like swimming pools, a gym and restaurants?
Why Kelvin Grove is a Hidden Gem for Magic Round
This is where things get interesting, and where I have some insider tips for you.
Kelvin Grove doesn’t always show up in those “top places to stay” lists.
And honestly? That’s exactly why it works.
The suburb of Kelvin Grove sits on the other side of Kelvin Grove Road, and it often gets overlooked by people looking for ‘accommodation close to Suncorp’. But you are missing out if you don’t consider it. I live here, in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village and we walk to events at Suncorp stadium (including concerts and State of Origin) all the time and in just 20 minutes! That means you can escape the chaos post event, in minutes, by just strolling away! We love it!
Here’s what I like about it (and what most visitors don’t realise):
- It’s quieter than the CBD and South Bank
- You’re not dealing with crowds 24/7
- Prices are often more reasonable
- It feels more like a neighbourhood than a tourist hub
- It is absolutely full of places to eat, a Woolworths and a bar
- You can use the QUT/Kelvin Grove busway to be in the CBD in 8 minutes
And during a weekend like Magic Round, that balance matters.
Because after a full day at the footy, the last thing most people want is:
- packed streets
- long waits for transport
- and noise that doesn’t switch off
Kelvin Grove gives you breathing room.
How Close is Kelvin Grove to Suncorp Stadium?

This is usually the dealbreaker question.
“How far is it actually?”
And the answer is: closer than most people think. My map above shows that you can walk there in 24 minutes, in reality, it takes us no longer than 20 minutes.
From Kelvin Grove to Suncorp Stadium:
- It’s around a 5-minute drive
- Roughly a 20-minute walk (depending on where you stay)
- Or a very quick bus or rideshare trip
Compare that to:
- navigating CBD traffic
- waiting for packed trains or buses post-game
And suddenly, being within walking distance starts to make a lot of sense.
Insider tip:
Game finish times are when the real chaos hits. Staying somewhere like Kelvin Grove means you can easily walk back to your accommodation faster, and with far less stress.
Accommodation Options for Magic Round (and What Actually Works)
Now let’s talk about the actual stay options – because this is where your decision really matters.
Hotels near Suncorp Stadium
Hotels in the CBD, South Bank and Milton are the choices for people who don’t know any better (just telling you how it is!) 😉.
They’re:
- close-ish to the stadium
- usually easy to find
- and heavily marketed for events like Magic Round
But during this weekend, they come with trade-offs:
- higher prices (sometimes significantly)
- limited availability
- less space (especially for groups)
If you’re booking early, they can work well.
If you’re booking late? It gets tricky.
Apartments and Short-Stay Accommodation
Serviced apartments are a step up.
They give you:
- more room
- kitchen facilities
- more affordable options for longer stays
You’ll find these scattered through:
- the CBD
- South Bank
- and surrounding inner-city areas
But again, during Magic Round:
- availability tightens
- prices increase
- and flexibility drops

This is where things start to shift.

Instead of one hotel room, you get:
- space to spread out
- a kitchen
- 2 swimming pools and a gym

You’re not competing with every other visitor trying to book the same hotel rooms.
A Standout Option in Kelvin Grove
Now, full transparency – I do have a featured Airbnb on this website. (You can see my Sapphire Apartment here).
And there’s a reason for that.
Because for Magic Round, it ticks the boxes that most visitors are actually looking for:
- walking distance to Suncorp Stadium without being in the chaos
- ideal for couples or friends
- comfortable enough to relax between games
- located in a quieter, local area
It’s the kind of place that works with your weekend, not against it.
If you’re planning your trip now, this is worth checking availability early — because places book up fast.
Insider Tips for Booking Magic Round Accommodation
This is the part most people wish they knew earlier.
Book earlier than you think you need to
Magic Round creates a surge in demand that catches people off guard.
Even if it feels early – it isn’t.
The best options (especially anything near the stadium or in well-positioned suburbs like Kelvin Grove) go first.
Think beyond the CBD
Yes, the CBD is convenient.
But it’s not the only option. And often not the best one.
Areas like:
- Kelvin Grove
- Milton
- Paddington
- Red Hill
offer a much better balance of:
- access
- comfort
- and value
Consider how you’ll actually get to and from the games

There is no need to worry about distance – we are close and I have written an handy article about how to get from our apartment to Suncorp Stadium here.
But what really matters is:
- how long it takes to get home after the game
- how crowded your route will be
- and how easy it is to move around
This is where slightly removed suburbs often win.
Plan for the whole weekend (not just game time)
Magic Round isn’t just about the matches.
You’ll be:
- heading out for meals
- catching up with friends
- exploring Brisbane
Staying somewhere that gives you flexibility makes a big difference.
So, Where Should You Stay for Magic Round?
If you want:
- absolute proximity/walking distance → look at Milton, Red Hill, Kelvin Grove, Paddington
- hotel convenience → CBD works (if you book early)
- space, value, dining options and a better overall experience → Kelvin Grove is hard to beat
And that’s really what this comes down to.
Not just where you can stay… but where you’ll actually enjoy staying.
Plan Smart, Not Just Fast
Magic Round is one of the best weekends to be in Brisbane.
The atmosphere, the energy, the back-to-back games, it’s all worth it.
But accommodation can make or break the experience.
If you leave it too late, you’ll be choosing from what’s left.
If you plan smart, and look just beyond the obvious, you’ll end up with something far better.
And that’s exactly where Kelvin Grove comes in.
