When people start looking for accommodation in Brisbane, they usually focus on South Bank, the CBD or Fortitude Valley.
And while those areas are popular for good reason, many visitors overlook one of Brisbane’s most convenient and underrated suburbs: Kelvin Grove.
As someone who lives in Kelvin Grove and regularly hosts visitors from around Australia and overseas, I’ve noticed something interesting. Guests often arrive not knowing much about the area, but leave saying the same thing:
“We had no idea Kelvin Grove was so close to everything.”
If you’re wondering where to stay in Brisbane or whether Kelvin Grove is a good place to stay during your Brisbane visit, here’s my honest opinion.
Quick Answer: Is Kelvin Grove a Good Place to Stay?

Yes.
Kelvin Grove is one of Brisbane’s best suburbs for visitors who want CBD convenience without CBD prices.
It’s particularly well suited to:
- Couples visiting Brisbane
- Business travellers
- QUT students and visiting families
- Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital visitors
- Event-goers attending Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane Showgrounds or South Bank events
- Anyone wanting a quieter place to stay while remaining close to the city
However, it may not be the best choice if you’re specifically looking for nightlife, luxury shopping or a riverfront location.

Kelvin Grove sits approximately 3 kilometres north-west of Brisbane’s CBD.

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is that you’re close to almost everything Brisbane visitors typically want to see.

Why Visitors Love Staying In Kelvin Grove

After speaking with guests and reading countless reviews, the same themes come up again and again.
It Feels Safe
This is probably one of the most common comments I hear.
Kelvin Grove has a relaxed, community feel. There are students, professionals, families, hospital workers, university staff and long-term residents all sharing the area.
Whether you’re arriving back after dinner or heading out for an early morning walk, the suburb generally feels safe and welcoming.
It’s Surprisingly Walkable
One of my favourite things about living here is how rarely I need to get in the car.
Within a few minutes’ walk you’ll find:
- Woolworths
- Cafes
- Restaurants
- Pharmacies
- Medical services
- QUT
- Victoria Park
- Bus stops with frequent services
Many guests arrive expecting to rely heavily on Uber but quickly realise they can walk to most of what they need.
Everything You Need Is Right Here
Unlike some accommodation areas where you need to travel for basic necessities, Kelvin Grove Urban Village functions almost like its own little neighbourhood hub.
Need groceries? Woolworths is across the road.
Need coffee? You’re spoiled for choice.
Need dinner after a long day of sightseeing? There are plenty of options within a few minutes’ walk.
Popular local favourites include Siam Spice, South Seoul and several excellent Vietnamese restaurants.
It’s Quiet At Night
This is one of the biggest differences between Kelvin Grove and some of Brisbane’s more tourist-focused areas.
You’re close enough to enjoy everything Brisbane offers, but far enough away to avoid much of the noise and late-night activity that comes with staying in the CBD or Fortitude Valley.
Kelvin Grove vs South Bank

South Bank is one of Brisbane’s most popular accommodation precincts.
But is it necessarily the best place to stay?
Not always.
| South Bank | Kelvin Grove |
| Usually more expensive accommodation | Generally better value |
| Busy tourist precinct | Quieter neighbourhood atmosphere |
| Excellent dining | Excellent dining |
| Closer to river attractions | Closer to Suncorp, QUT and RBWH |
| Limited free parking | More parking options |
| Hotel-focused accommodation | Larger apartment accommodation available |
Personally, if you’re planning to spend most of your day exploring Brisbane anyway, staying in Kelvin Grove can make a lot of financial sense.
The 50-cent bus fares make it incredibly easy to reach South Bank whenever you want, while still enjoying more space and often lower accommodation costs.
Kelvin Grove vs Fortitude Valley
Fortitude Valley is Brisbane’s entertainment and nightlife district.
If your main priority is bars, clubs and late-night venues, the Valley is probably the better choice.
However, many visitors prefer Kelvin Grove because:
- It feels quieter
- It feels safer
- Parking is easier
- Accommodation is often better value
- It is still close enough to visit the Valley whenever you choose
For many travellers, particularly couples and business visitors, Kelvin Grove offers a more relaxing base.

What Most People Don’t Realise About Kelvin Grove

The biggest misconception is that Kelvin Grove is simply a student suburb.
While QUT certainly contributes to the area’s character, there is much more to it than that.
The suburb is multicultural, friendly and incredibly well connected.
It is also home to:
- Victoria Park
- La Boite Theatre
- Kelvin Grove Village Markets
- Extensive green spaces
- Walking and cycling connections into the city
Many visitors are surprised by just how much parkland and open space exists so close to Brisbane’s CBD.
As a resident, this is one of the things I value most. Everything you need for day-to-day living is within easy reach, yet there is still plenty of greenery and open space to enjoy.
When Kelvin Grove Might Not Be the Best Choice
No suburb is perfect.
Kelvin Grove may not suit you if:
- You want a nightlife-focused holiday
- You want luxury shopping on your doorstep
- You specifically want a riverfront location
- You plan to spend every day and night in Fortitude Valley
In those situations, South Bank, the CBD or Fortitude Valley may be better suited.
My Opinion
If you’re looking for a Brisbane suburb that combines convenience, walkability, safety and value for money, Kelvin Grove is hard to beat.
You’ll be close to the CBD, South Bank, QUT, Victoria Park and major attractions while enjoying a quieter atmosphere and often paying less than you would in Brisbane’s most heavily promoted accommodation precincts.
Kelvin Grove gives you CBD convenience without CBD prices. And you’ll save money by being able to walk almost everywhere.
